Did Traffic Police in Tanzania Implement Uwazi Recommendations?

The Guardian reports that the Police Force in Tanzania plans to cut down the number of roadblocks on the highway from Dar es Salaam to Rusumo, Kagera (at the border with Uganda) from 54 to 14. According to the newspaper, the police believes that removing roadblocks will also help to convince the public that these were not meant as a vehicle for extracting bribes. Last year Uwazi at Twaweza recommended a reduction of roadblocks on major highways. Uwazi had conducted a survey which found that in 90 per cent of all cases when police personnel stopped trucks at highway check points, bribes were paid.
