Citizens Mapping Services in Tandale

Citizens are mapping an informal settlement in Tandale, Dar es Salaam in order to improve delivery of basic services. Tandale is home to about 50,000 people, and the population is growing, but the unplanned suburb has insufficient basic services like water supply, drainage systems, schools and roads. Community members in Tandale were actively involved from the initial stages, so as to sustain the mapping process. The use of maps and community reporting is also expected to help stimulate finding local solutions to problems.

The project is managed by the GroundTruth Initiative, with support from Ardhi University, the World Bank and Twaweza. GroundTruth recently completed a similar project in Kibera, Nairobi, and lessons from Kenya are taken on board for the Tandale mapping.
