Tanzania and Kenya to commit to be more open to citizens

The governments of Tanzania and Kenya will join over 40 other countries in pledging to be more open to their citizens, by signing on to the Open Government Partnership at a high level event on Tuesday 20 September 2011.

Citizens Mapping Services in Tandale

Citizens are mapping an informal settlement in Tandale, Dar es Salaam in order to improve delivery of basic services. The project is managed by the GroundTruth Initiative, with support from Ardhi University, the World Bank and Twaweza. GroundTruth recently completed a similar project in Kibera, Nairobi, and lessons from Kenya are taken on board for the Tandale mapping.

Open Government Partnership to launch on September 20

The Open Government Partnership (OGP) will be launched in New York on 20 September 2011, on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly. The event will be graced by Heads of State, led by the co-chairs of the initiative, U.S President Barack Obama and the President Dilma Rousseff of Brazil. The OGP is a multilateral initiative that aims to secure concrete commitments from governments to promote transparency, empower citizens, fight corruption and harness new technologies to strengthen governance.

New Uwezo report rings alarm in East Africa

The former General Secretary of the East African Community, Ambassador, Juma Mwapachu has challenged stakeholders to sharpen the quality of primary education in the East African if the regional aims to be competitive at global level. Ambassador Mwapachu said that in his keynote address at the launching of an East African wide education report in Dar es Salaam. The new Uwezo East Africa report shows that children in higher primary school classes in Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania failed to perform tests of Standard 2 levels.
