Jointly with Datavision, Uwazi has initiated a weekly mobile phone survey in Dar es Salaam. To make this happen, first a baseline survey was implemented amongst 550 households. Click on questionnaire (PDF) or dataset (STATA) to download the particulars for this survey.

To date almost 20 rounds of the mobile phone survey have been held. Topics covered include

Price paid for water

How children sit at school

Reliability of electricity

Rain, drainage and flooding

Mobile phone usage

Garbage and garbage collection

Teacher performance

Banking

Public sanitation facilities

Road safety

Services at health facilities

Inflation and price changes

Constitutional review

Use of bed nets

Knowledge about complaint mechanisms

Information from these mobile surveys is captured in another data set, that can be downloaded by clicking here. The baseline data set and the mobile response data set can be combined by merging the two datasets using the household identifier (hhid).

As of July 2011 the mobile phone data gathering will no longer be managed by Uwazi but will be handled by: third party results monitoring. Click here for more information about this initiative.

Independent Statistics Review

Strengthening statistics through independent review and assessment

Independent Statistics Review provides a stamp of quality assurance on statistics in Tanzania. The Statistics Reviewer is completely impartial and independent – however the Statistics Reviewer works closely with producers of statistics, including the National Bureau of Statistics, as well as users and funders of data.

Statistics review is a new concept jointly developed by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), the accountability and transparency initiative (ACT) and Uwazi. Following international advertisement, Mr. Tim Harris was appointed as first Independent Statistics Reviewer. Mr Harris started working January 1st 2011.

Over the coming months a series of in-depth and lighter reviews will be conducted, with the reports available on the Statistics Review Tanzania website (under construction). The areas that will be reviewed over the next 6 months include:

	• Population statistics
• The National Data Archive (NADA)
• The Tanzanian Socio-Economic Database (TSED)
• The NBS website
• Hotel statistics and their contribution to quarterly GDP

In addition a dashboard of indicators will keep track of progress in key areas of the statistics system: monitoring timely release of statistics, progress of major projects such as the 2012 Census, delivery of donor funding commitments, and the milestones of the Tanzanian Statistical Master Plan.

The Independent Statistics Reviewer welcomes comments on the process and the outputs of Statistics Review Tanzania. You can get in touch and join the discussion on the website or by emailing: StatsReviewTanzania@gmail.com
Local Government's in Tanzania ignore answering audit questions

Accountable governance of public resources means less audit queries that are not resolved. Many local government administration's in Tanzania clearly fail in this area. The 2009/10 report of the Controller and Auditor General shows that money implied in audit questions that are not addressed in LGAs have hit 122 billion shillings, its highest in five years. Only five Councils did well by addressing all audit questions from previous years in 2009/10 (Iringa Municipal Counci, Njombe Town Council, Kilolo District Council, Chato District Council and Songea Municipal Council). These are not shown here. Check out which councils ignored audit questions in 2009/10.

Making data accessible has never been easier. Google has launched a Public Data Explorer which makes it easy to explore large datasets. Within a matter of minutes one produces a chart like the one below that compares growth in per capita income for Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda with that of the World average. It also shows growth in per capita income for South Korea, a country that in the 1960s was a rich (poor) as any of the East African countries.
