Citizens urged to monitor secondary schools' funds

Twaweza is collaborating with HakiElimu and Policy Forum to enable citizens to monitor disbursement of capitation grant funds to secondary schools nationwide. The monitoring program was initiated on 1 February, 2011 and will be undertaken over several months. According to the Second Secondary Education Development Programme (SEDP II), the Government is required to disburse Tshs 10,000 for each student to the school level by January 31, 2011, so as to enable secondary schools to purchase books and other essential learning materials. Twaweza Tanzania Programme Manager, Mr Joseph Ngwegwe, called on parents, members of the public and teachers to monitor if the funds have reached public secondary schools in their areas. “Parents need to ask schools if they received the funds so that they can be used to improve school learning,” he said.
