Government plans major boost in education

The government of Tanzania has launched phase two of its Secondary Education Development Program (SEDP II) aiming at  improving quality in public secondary schools. President Jakaya Kikwete, who inaugurated SEDP II in Dar es Salaam on 19th January 2011, promised to increase capitation grant.  World Bank has committed a loan to the tune of USD 150 million. The government has not disclosed its funding commitment. “With the current shortage in Government revenue, my worry is whether the plan will be fully funded,” said Mr Rakesh Rajani, head of Twaweza, a non-governmental organization advocating good governance.
