#MbungeLive: Monitoring the promises of MPs

At Twaweza we are passionate about creating better relationships between leaders and citizens, whereby citizens are active in demanding better services and governance from leadership and authorities are responsive to these citizen voices.

In 2016 the government banned the live coverage of parliamentary sessions in Tanzania, known locally as Bunge Live. The ban took away citizens' power to monitor their how well their MPs are representing their interests at the national level.

Having that in mind, Twaweza, in collaboration with Maa Media Company Ltd have produced two pilot episodes of #MbungeLive, a 30-minute television show aiming at monitoring the promises made by MPs to their citizens and what citizens have to say about the implementation of those promises.

MbungeLive focuses on how accountable and responsive MPs are to their constituents by describing the issues prevalent in the constituency, the MP’s promises made during the last (2015) elections, and the extent to which the MP has fulfilled these promises. The show includes a focus on the interventions of the specific MPs in Parliament alongside some more general awareness-raising on the roles and responsibilities of MPs more broadly.

The two pilot episodes feature Honourable John C. Heche, an MP from Tanzania’s leading opposition political party, CHADEMA representing the Tarime Vijijini constituency and Honourable Hussein Bashe, an MP from the ruling party, CCM representing Nzega constituency.

The pilots have been screen in up to ten wards in each of the two constituencies.

#MbungeLive has galvanised citizens into an increased knowledge of the work of their MP and into making demands for better implementation of campaign promises.

These screening have given a chance to the citizens to have a face to face conversation with their each other and local leaders.

#MbungLive is acting as a long waited push to the MPs to stay accountable and responsible for their citizens by making sure they deliver according to their promises and the needs of their respective constituents.
