Open Government Partnership to launch on September 20

The Open Government Partnership (OGP) will be launched in New York on 20 September 2011, on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly. The event will be graced by Heads of State, led by the co-chairs of the initiative, U.S President Barack Obama and the President Dilma Rousseff of Brazil. An Open Government Declaration, that commits governments to be more open towards their citizens, is expected to be signed by countries across the globe.

The OGP is a multilateral initiative that aims to secure concrete commitments from governments to promote transparency, empower citizens, fight corruption and harness new technologies to strengthen governance.

Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda have all met the basic benchmarks to be eligible to join the initiative. It will be interesting to see how the countries respond to the opportunity, and how they follow up in practice.

Twaweza is a founding member of the OGP Steering Committee, and will be represented at the event by its Head, Rakesh Rajani. If you have any thoughts, ideas and criticisms to share -- please send them to ideas@twaweza.orgwith OGP in the subject line.
