Call for proposals: Images of inequality

Twaweza means “we can make it happen” in Swahili. Twaweza works on enabling children to learn, citizens to exercise agency and governments to be more open and responsive in Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda. Our flagship programs include Uwezo, Africa’s largest annual citizen assessment to assess children’s learning levels, and Sauti za Wananchi, Africa’s first nationally representative mobile phone survey. We undertake effective public and policy engagement, through powerful media partnerships and global leadership of initiatives such as the Open Government Partnership.

Inequality is an increasingly critical issue both globally and nationally. The wealthiest 1% control 46% of wealth globally. The Uwezo data have consistently highlighted substantial differences in both learning outcomes and school environments between urban and rural households, between the wealthy and the poor and between specific locations.

To continue the discussion as a way of looking for solution, Twaweza is planning to host an open discussion on inequalities in education and photo exhibition on the same this November in Dodoma.

The main objective of this work is to take photographs of inequalities in education in Dar es salaam and to travel to the nearest region to do the same and showcase the available inequalities. Later the photographer will showcase these in a photo exhibition this September in Dodoma.

Specific tasks and outputs:

  1. To take professional photographs focusing on inequalities in education theme in Dar es salaam and the nearest region to showcase the available inequalities between the regions and within the regions.
  2. Will be responsible for printing the pictures in high resolution for better showcasing.
  3. To prepare for the photo exhibition and make sure that the setup is ready on time and know where you want your work showcased in the venue.
  4. Making sure the photos get to Dodoma in time - transport  (getting it there, and back)
