Malnutrition kills 600,000 children in ten years

The Daily News, a Tanzania newspaper, writes that inadequate nutrition has cost the lives of more than 600,000 children under five years over the past decade. Quoting a research brief by Twaweza, the paper explains that improper nutrition burdens the economy, as TZS 650bn/- are spent each year on treatment of diseases that could have been avoided with a proper diet.

The paper notes ongoing efforts to establish regulations and standards for fortification of staple foods. The research brief revealed that in 2010 alone, 43,000 children were at risk of premature death from serious malnutrition.
