Picking up the pieces: In solidarity with all Tanzanians

Twaweza East Africa joins all Tanzanians in mourning the innocent lives of people lost in the post-election violence. Our hearts go out to all families grieving their sons, daughters, fathers, mothers and friends whose lives were brutally cut short by the indiscriminate violence. These were citizens of Tanzania with hopes, dreams, and working hard to build a better future. Our hearts are with all Tanzanians who are grieving, struggling, and hoping for healing.

In times such as this, our collective response must be guided not by fear or division, but by humanity and conscience. We must call this situation what it is – the tremendous loss of life and well-being of the youth of our country. Only by naming pain honestly can we begin to heal.

As we begin to look into the future, we plead to citizens, civil society, faith leaders, media, and the private sector to come together and reaffirm our commitment to truth, openness, and justice. We particularly beseech those with power to ensure the rule of law and of justice is upheld, and that our people, especially our young people, have their voices protected and their needs and suffering acknowledged.
