All the Best, Aidan – A Farewell and a Fresh Start at Twaweza
On April 10, 2025, the Twaweza East Africa community came together for a special event—one filled with gratitude, reflection, and hope. The occasion marked the transition of leadership as Aidan Eyakuze, our Executive Director for the past decade, officially handed over the reins to Anna Bwana, our incoming Executive Director.
Aidan’s decade-long journey was not without challenges, but it was deeply impactful. During his farewell reflections, he spoke candidly about the rising tide of democratic backsliding across East Africa—and the world. He challenged all of us to rethink our role as citizens, not spectators, in the fight for freedom and accountability.
One of his most personal stories was from 2019, when a sudden change in Tanzanian law nearly derailed Twaweza’s legal status. It was a moment of deep uncertainty, but through collective resilience and persistence, the organisation not only survived—it grew stronger.
And there were victories worth celebrating. Aidan shared the story behind the removal of the mobile money transaction levy (“Tozo”), a change that directly improved the lives of countless Tanzanians. That success, he noted, was possible because of collaboration between citizens, civil society, and the media—proof that when we act together, change is possible.
Stepping into this legacy, Anna Bwana brought her voice of optimism and determination. She highlighted democratic gains in parts of Africa, the resilience of East African economies, and the creative power of youth who are redefining systems from the ground up. “Our task,” she said, “is to turn that resistance and energy into lasting, system-level change.”
As we celebrate Aidan’s contributions and welcome Anna’s leadership, one truth stands out: real change is possible when citizens take centre stage.
Thank you, Aidan, for your courageous leadership. And welcome, Anna—onward, together.
