At the Open Government Partnership (OGP) Summit in Spain, Twaweza East Africa’s Executive Director Anna Bwana joined global and regional leaders to reflect on the state of democracy and the role of open government in strengthening citizen participation.

She also met with Aidan Eyakuze, now CEO of OGP and former Executive Director of Twaweza East Africa, underscoring a shared commitment to advance accountability, transparency, and citizen agency globally.

“At a time when the world, and our East Africa region, is reeling from a democratic decline, the discussions around open government remind us that investment in ‘shock absorbers’ is a necessity. And these shock absorbers have to include an independent media, a vibrant and open civil society, and independent accountability institutions.”
— Anna Bwana, Executive Director, Twaweza East Africa
